Gardening is generally a relaxing and therapeutic hobby. If you are thinking about gardening, you are probably asking yourself questions like what type of soil is best, what equipment you will need and when is the appropriate time to plant. This article contains important information for anyone wanting to begin a garden.

You will need to properly lay sod. Prior to laying the sod, prepare your soil. Remove any weeds, and break the soil up into a fine tilth. Lightly, but firmly compact the soil, making sure it is flat. Thoroughly moisten the soil. The sod should be laid in staggered rows, with the joints offset from one another. The sod should form a flat and firm surface. Fill in gaps with soil. The sod requires water on a daily basis for two weeks, then the roots will have taken hold and ready to be walked on.

While you garden, it’s important that you wear the right clothing to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. Pair sunglasses with wide-brimmed hats and a dab of sunblock. Protecting yourself from the sun is the best way to prevent sunburns and skin cancer.

Get more plants by cutting the roots of existing plants. The roots must be cut during the winter months, when the plants are usually dormant. Use a knife to take the longest and thickest roots away from the plant. Trim each root to a length of two inches. Put the sections on top of a blend of grit and damp peat, in a seed tray. Cover the roots with an additional layer of grit and peat. Leave them in a cool location, and in about thirty days you will have wonderful new seedlings. Plant each seedling in its own small pot until they grow big enough for outdoor planting.

Put together a calendar for planning your garden. A planting calendar can make your gardening experience more efficient because you will have a plan for each season. This will allow you to prepare in advance, knowing exactly what to purchase and when you should buy things. You can create your planting calendar in many popular computer programs, or simply jot one down on paper.

Choose plant strains that will give you the best harvest with the biggest yield. If yield is important, choose hybrids designed to resist cold and diseases rather than traditional varieties.

Always make sure to mow your lawn to the appropriate length, always making sure that the cut is not too close. If you leave your grass kind of high, your roots will be deeper and your lawn will be stronger and not dry out. Grass that is shorter has a root system that is easier to dry out.

As was discussed in the article, gardening can be quite a rewarding activity, but significant knowledge is required to tend to your garden properly. With the right advice and proper planning, you’ll soon have a thriving garden. Simply use the advice presented here and wonderful garden will be growing from your land.
